The state of mental health - It’s nuts!
Here is a series of quotes I came across today whilst checking my emails. I particularly like the very first one. Incidentally here is a link http://www.huffingtonpost.com/allen-frances/whats-normal-whats-not_b_2992949.html to a very recent article by Allen Frances whose candor is very refreshing. This is very worthwhile reading if you have any interest at all in the current state of the field of mental health.
“There are no objective tests in psychiatry-no X-ray, laboratory, or exam finding that says definitively that someone does or does not have a mental disorder.” “there is no definition of a mental disorder.” “It’s bull—. I mean, you just can’t define it.” — Allen Frances, Psychiatrist and former DSM-IV Task Force Chairman
“In reality, psychiatric diagnosing is a kind of spiritual profiling that can destroy lives and frequently does.” — Peter Breggin, Psychiatrist
“…modern psychiatry has yet to convincingly prove the genetic/biologic cause of any single mental illness…Patients [have] been diagnosed with ’chemical imbalances’ despite the fact that no test exists to support such a claim, and…there is no real conception of what a correct chemical balance would look like.” — Dr. David Kaiser, Psychiatrist
“There’s no biological imbalance. When people come to me and they say, ’I have a biochemical imbalance,’ I say, ’Show me your lab tests.’ There are no lab tests. So what’s the biochemical imbalance?” — Dr. Ron Leifer, Psychiatrist
“Virtually anyone at any given time can meet the criteria for bipolar disorder or ADHD. Anyone. And the problem is everyone diagnosed with even one of these ’illnesses’ triggers the pill dispenser.” — Dr. Stefan Kruszewski, Psychiatrist
“No behavior or misbehavior is a disease or can be a disease. That’s not what diseases are. Diseases are malfunctions of the human body, of the heart, the liver, the kidney, the brain. Typhoid fever is a disease. Spring fever is not a disease; it is a figure of speech, a metaphoric disease. All mental diseases are metaphoric diseases, misrepresented as real diseases and mistaken for real diseases.” — Thomas Szasz, Professor of Psychiatry Emeritus
“It has occurred to me with forcible irony that psychiatry has quite literally lost its mind, and along with it the minds of the patients they are presumably suppose to care for.”— David Kaiser, Psychiatrist
“DSM-IV is the fabrication upon which psychiatry seeks acceptance by medicine in general. Insiders know it is more a political than scientific document… DSM-IV has become a bible and a money making bestseller—its major failings notwithstanding.”— Loren Mosher, M.D., Clinical Professor of Psychiatry
“All psychiatrists have in common that when they are caught on camera or on microphone, they cower and admit that there are no such things as chemical imbalances/diseases, or examinations or tests for them. What they do in practice, lying in every instance, abrogating [revoking] the informed consent right of every patient and poisoning them in the name of ’treatment’ is nothing short of criminal.”— Dr Fred Baughman Jr., Pediatric Neurologist
“Psychiatry makes unproven claims that depression, bipolar illness, anxiety, alcoholism and a host of other disorders are in fact primarily biologic and probably genetic in origin…This kind of faith in science and progress is staggering, not to mention naïve and perhaps delusional.” — Dr. David Kaiser, psychiatrist
“In short, the whole business of creating psychiatric categories of ’disease’, formalizing them with consensus, and subsequently ascribing diagnostic codes to them, which in turn leads to their use for insurance billing, is nothing but an extended racket furnishing psychiatry a pseudo-scientific aura. The perpetrators are, of course, feeding at the public trough.”— Dr. Thomas Dorman, internist and member of the Royal College of Physicians of the UK
“I believe, until the public and psychiatry itself see that DSM labels are not only useless as medical ’diagnoses’ but also have the potential to do great harm—particularly when they are used as means to deny individual freedoms, or as weapons by psychiatrists acting as hired guns for the legal system.” — Dr. Sydney Walker III, psychiatrist
“The way things get into the DSM is not based on blood test or brain scan or physical findings. It’s based on descriptions of behavior. And that’s what the whole psychiatry system is.”— Dr. Colin Ross, psychiatrist
“No biochemical, neurological, or genetic markers have been found for Attention Deficit Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Depression, Schizophrenia, anxiety, compulsive alcohol and drug abuse, overeating, gambling or any other so-called mental illness, disease, or disorder.” — Bruce Levine, Ph.D., psychologist and author of Commonsense Rebellion
“Unlike medical diagnoses that convey a probable cause, appropriate treatment and likely prognosis, the disorders listed in DSM-IV [and ICD-10] are terms arrived at through peer consensus.”— Tana Dineen Ph.D., psychologist
“It’s not science. It’s politics and economics. That’s what psychiatry is: politics and economics. Behavior control, it is not science, it is not medicine.”— Thomas Szasz, Professor of Psychiatry Emeritus
The question is not whether people present with what appear to be psychological problems, but more, what can we do to help them. That said, there are alternatives and here is a link to those:
I feel it does us a great disservice to point out the flaws with another practice if we do not at the same time offer up some workable solutions.
Let’s spread the word far and wide and bring some common sense back to the field of mental health.
Please feel free to pass this email along to anyone you think would appreciate the information.
Don’t Get Tricked Into Downloading Trojan via Skype
Security researchers have uncovered a new Trojan spreading via Skype that can hijack a computer. According to Russian security firm Kaspersky Lab, Skype users are being tricked into downloading the file after receiving a phishing message reading among other phrases “this is my favourite picture of you”.

Gallstone Testimonial and Data
Re the post last week on getting rid of gallstones, I received this testimonial from someone in my circle who has used it successfully.
Re: Gall Bladder cleanse
I have successfully done 3 gall bladder cleanses, similar to the one you mention.
They are fantastic! After having wound up in hospital with a gall bladder attack I did lots of research.
The one thing missing from your posted suggestion is that parasites need to be cleaned out of the system in order to make the cleanse most effective (and easier to do). This takes a few weeks of a simple parasite cleanse beforehand (I did 60 drops a day of a particular homeopathic mix).
Anyway, it’s AMAZING how many stones came out! But even more so how much energy & zest I got back after each cleanse (I’ve done them about every 2 years).
Definitely recommend it!

Dr Peter Dingle Writes:
Having a handful of walnuts a day reduces the risk of developing diabetes type 2 by 24%. Walnuts are a good source of two essential unsaturated fatty acids, alpha-linolenic acid and linoleic acid. Other research shows that walnuts, with their unique nutrient profile, can play a role in also reducing cardiovascular risk factors and help with weight control. Diet not drugs!

I Don’t Feel Well And I Don’t Know Why
This isn’t advice from a drug pushing a doctor, this is sanity!
I wonder how many people would actually do what was recommended?
My guess is that a lot of people on my page (or similar pages) wouldn’t need the advice and a lot not on my page (or similar pages) would not follow it.
Considering the earlier post about one in five Americans being on mind altering psychiatric medication, I think it behoves us to share this far and wide.

Help Another Today
This is such a simple and relatively easy goal that we can all aspire to accomplish on a daily basis. And oh, if we did, what a world it would be!
“I believe that if, at the end of it all, according to our abilities, we have done something to make others a little happier, and something to make ourselves a little happier, that is about the best we can do. To make others less happy is a crime. To make ourselves unhappy is where all crime starts. We must try to contribute joy to the world. That is true no matter what our problems, our health, our circumstances. We must try.” -Roger Ebert
Kicking Indigenous People Off Their Land So You Can Hunt Lions? Not If I Can Help It!
Just received from Avaaz.
We are elders of the Maasai from Tanzania, one of Africa’s oldest tribes. The government has just announced that it plans to kick thousands of our families off our lands so that wealthy tourists can use them to shoot more lions and leopards. The evictions are to begin immediately.
Last year, when word first leaked about this plan, almost one million Avaaz members rallied to our aid. Your attention and the storm it created forced the government to deny the plan, and set them back months. But the President has waited for international attention to die down, and now he’s revived his plan to take our land. We need your help again urgently.
President Kikwete may not care about us, but he’s shown he’ll respond to global pressure -- to all of you! If you send messages to Tanzanian embassies across the globe, Kikwete will hear a barrage of reports that his latest land grab is reverberating around the world. This is our only chance to get him to back down from destroying our way of life.
Click below to send a urgent message demanding they stop the eviction:
Then share the email below with others so we can reach millions around the world calling on Kikwete to save our land.
With hope and determination,

One day you’ll be just a memory for some people. Do your best to be a good one.
A mother posed this question on Facebook:
“Anyone with teens or having had teens able to advise me on how to balance allowing-them-to be-an-individual with not-growing-a-lazy-mooching-lay-around-and-still-expect-all-to-be-done-for-them-person and not-screaming-at-them-and-losing-the-plot-entirely???”
I responded this way:
The most success I have had with people is when I have found out what they wanted to do then helped them attain it.
I must confess to having lost the plot entirely on more than one occasion and it did nobody any good - me included. I think it might have something to do with the quality, or lack thereof, of the affinity, reality (agreement) and communication on the comm line.
A very wise man wrote in 1950 that talent. personality and basic purpose were a package. I sometimes observe that when a person is working on their basic purpose, progress is like a hot knife through soft butter and when they are not, it is like walking through molasses in winter.
I have a couple of techniques I use to help people work out what their basic purpose is in life and get them moving in that direction.
One is to get them on the left side of a piece of paper to make a list of all their talents and on the right side to list their personality characteristics (you might have to clear both these definitions with them) then, having done that, look over the two lists to see what basic purpose that combination of talents and personality characteristics would forward.
Another is to look at all the things in the past at which they have excelled or thoroughly enjoyed and get into communication with them about what purpose they had at the time or what purpose would align with that activity.
Another is to explain the concept of Be, Do and Have (baker bakes bread) then ask them to make a list of 50 occupations.
That done, get them to write what the product is that each produces.
Then get them to rule a line through each that they would not consider doing.
Then get them to put a line through each that they are currently not suited or could not get themselves qualified to do by physical or mental capacity, education, funds etc.
Look over the remaining items and put a tick next to the profession\product they would enjoy doing\producing.
If there is one that they are grossly more interested in than the rest, there’s the one.
Otherwise pick a couple and get into communication with them. Find out what the income potential is, the qualifications required to start, the number of positions available on Seek.com etc.
The more into comm you get with an area the better you can make informed judgements.
Wow. This one cuts deep.
One young man went to apply for a managerial position in a big company. He passed the initial interview, and now would meet the director for the final interview.
The director discovered from his CV that the youth’s academic achievements were excellent. He asked, “Did you obtain any scholarships in school?” the youth answered “no”.
“Was it your father who paid for your school fees?”
“My father passed away when I was one year old, it was my mother who paid for my school fees.” he replied.
“Where did your mother work?”
“My mother worked as clothes cleaner.”
The director requested the youth to show his hands. The youth showed a pair of hands that were smooth and perfect.
“Have you ever helped your mother wash the clothes before?”
“Never, my mother always wanted me to study and read more books. Besides, my mother can wash clothes faster than me.”
The director said, “I have a request. When you go home today, go and clean your mother’s hands, and then see me tomorrow morning.”
The youth felt that his chance of landing the job was high. When he went back home, he asked his mother to let him clean her hands. His mother felt strange, happy but with mixed feelings, she showed her hands to her son.
The youth cleaned his mother’s hands slowly. His tear fell as he did that. It was the first time he noticed that his mother’s hands were so wrinkled, and there were so many bruises in her hands. Some bruises were so painful that his mother winced when he touched it.
This was the first time the youth realized that it was this pair of hands that washed the clothes everyday to enable him to pay the school fees. The bruises in the mother’s hands were the price that the mother had to pay for his education, his school activities and his future.
After cleaning his mother hands, the youth quietly washed all the remaining clothes for his mother.
That night, mother and son talked for a very long time.
Next morning, the youth went to the director’s office.
The Director noticed the tears in the youth’s eyes, when he asked: “Can you tell me what have you done and learned yesterday in your house?”
The youth answered, “I cleaned my mother’s hand, and also finished cleaning all the remaining clothes.”
“I know now what appreciation is. Without my mother, I would not be who I am today. By helping my mother, only now do I realize how difficult and tough it is to get something done on your own. And I have come to appreciate the importance and value of helping one’s family.”
The director said, "This is what I am looking for in a manager. I want to recruit a person who can appreciate the help of others, a person who knows the sufferings of others to get things done, and a person who would not put money as his only goal in life.”
“You are hired.”
This young person worked very hard, and received the respect of his subordinates. Every employee worked diligently and worked as a team. The company’s performance improved tremendously.
A child, who has been protected and habitually given whatever he wanted, would develop an “entitlement mentality” and would always put himself first. He would be ignorant of his parent’s efforts. When he starts work, he assumes that every person must listen to him, and when he becomes a manager, he would never know the sufferings of his employees and would always blame others. For this kind of people, who may be good academically, they may be successful for a while, but eventually they would not feel a sense of achievement. They will grumble and be full of hatred and fight for more. If we are this kind of protective parents, are we really showing love or are we destroying our children instead?
You can let your child live in a big house, eat a good meal, learn piano, watch on a big screen TV. But when you are cutting grass, please let them experience it. After a meal, let them wash their plates and bowls together with their brothers and sisters. It is not because you do not have money to hire a maid, but it is because you want to love them in a right way. You want them to understand, no matter how rich their parents are, one day their hair will grow gray, same as the mother of that young person. The most important thing is your child learns how to appreciate the effort and experience the difficulty and learns the ability to work with others to get things done.
Try to forward this story to as many people as possible... ...this may change somebody’s fate.
Message from the Ambulance Service
We all carry our mobile phones with names & numbers stored in its memory. If we were to be involved in an accident or were taken ill, the people attending us would have our mobile phone but wouldn’t know who to call.
Yes, there are hundreds of numbers stored but which one is the contact person in case of an emergency? Hence this ’ICE’ (In Case of Emergency) Campaign.
The concept of ’ICE’ is catching on quickly. It is a method of contact during emergency situations. As mobile phones are carried by the majority of the population, all you need to do is store the number of a contact person or persons who should be contacted during emergency under the name ’ICE’ ( In Case Of Emergency).
The idea was thought up by a paramedic who found that when he went to the scenes of accidents there were always mobile phones with patients but they didn’t know which number to call. He therefore thought that it would be a good idea if there was a nationally recognized name for this purpose. In an emergency situation, Emergency Service personnel and hospital staff would be able to quickly contact the right person by simply dialing the number you have stored as ’ICE’.
Please forward this. It won’t take too many ’forwards’ before everybody will know about this. It really could save your life, or put a loved one’s mind at rest.
For more than one contact name simply enter ICE1, ICE2 and ICE3 etc.
PASS THIS AROUND AS MANY PEOPLE AS POSSIBLE AS THIS CAN HELP IN AN EMERGENCY.
