G'day,
I hope this finds you fit and well and that you enjoy this week's collection of some of the best that crossed my digital desk.
Monday, Feb 29 I went to a talk by Marion Nestle, a renown nutritional academic, on the subject of "Soda Politics". I also caught her on ABC Classic FM the next day. (Thanks Harry.)
Marion wrote "Soda Politics" on the influencing of our dietary choices by, among others, the actions of Coke and Pepsi. Coke have been funding scientists to conduct research with the intent of proving that diet is of little consequence in obesity, we just need to move more.
Nothing could be further from the truth! The amount of exercise you hae to do to work off any extra calories you consume is huge! Consume an extra 300 calories and you need to walk three miles to burn them off! http://nj2ny50.org/calorie-estimator-how-many-calories-do-you-burn-walking And most personal trainers will tell you something like weight loss is 90% in the kitchen and 10% in the gym!
So when you start to research what it takes to be healthy, expect false information to flood your screen because big-monied, vested interest groups have a stake in you being VERY misinformed!
An interesting point Marion made is that when she started teach, she looked for text book references and found no two texts match exactly on the subject of human nutritional requirements. About which she was shocked.
My view is that due to differences in our size, gender, the amount of exercise we take, our accumulated nutritional deficiencies, probably no two people have exactly the same nutritional requirements.
One thing both Marion and I agree on wholeheartedly, most of us do not get enough nutrition in our diet to be optimally healthy!
